Why Start-ups & Small Businesses Are Cool

start-up small business officeAnyone who talks to me about business or the economy knows how I feel about small companies and start-ups.  I have huge admiration for anyone who strikes out and starts a new business.  I don’t care how small the business or project either.   I appreciate an experienced professional who is going create a business to fill a niche in a new unique way.  However, I appreciate little Timmy who starts a lemonade stand on the corner in the exact same way.

Individuals who decide to create something worthwhile that provides a product or service that people want or helps solve a problem are at the top of my list of people to admire. Some may not understand this at all, but some of you know exactly what I mean.

Why are Start-Ups & Small Businesses So Cool?

  • Individualism – It takes a strong individual to have the courage to commit to building a business, taking on the risks and responsibilities and doing whatever it takes to make it work and grow.
  • Heart – It’s all about the entrepreneurial spirit.  It’s about independence & self reliance.  It’s about doing it your way and living on your own terms.   That is cool.
  • Productivity – Start-ups and small businesses brave the market. They boldly venture into the market place and face the ultimate test…the profit test.  To pass the test they must be productive.  This productivity creates more products or services efficiently, thus offering consumers abundant high quality goods at affordable prices.  This in turn creates profit and growth, which leads us to the next point.
  • The engine of a prosperous society – Small businesses make up the majority of businesses.  This means that most jobs come from small businesses.   It is the beauty of the market that allows for a passionate  individual to start a business, be productive, reap profit and grow…all of which helps the economy, the people served and all of society. Plus, nearly all large businesses were once small businesses.

I could go on and on about this, and I probably will at some point.  For now, here is a good start to what will likely be a growing list of why start-ups and small businesses are cool.
